Vicki Dean's Travels
We've just returned to Nairobi where I have free internet access. I
will be here for about day and a half. Kenya is about 8 hours behind
SA time. Then we take off for Rome and the European part of the holiday of approx 4 weeks duration.
We haven't had any problems with theft and stuff ups have only been
minor. The safaris were really interesting. We cruised around spotting
animals and then would watch how they interact within their species
and then across species. The guide, Sam, for the last half of the
safaris was brilliant, full of info and made it fun. You have to keep
your wits about you in Africa but it is a fantastic place to visit. I
know a lot more about the fauna, flora and geography of Africa but I'm
sure this is a tiny bit of knowledge in the scheme of things. I can
identfy ia leopard, cheeta, hyena, jackal, implala,
gizelle, water buck, hippo, rhino, wilderbeest, some birds (expecially an LBB ie a Little Brown Bird or a PLB ie a Pretty Little Bird) etc etc. Henry and Helen are much more skilful at this but I have come a long way in a short time.
You will not be shocked to hear that I danced with the Masai tribe (never pass up on a dancing opportunity) and
visited a Masai manyatta (compound). Everything is made from their
cows ie their huts are made from cow dung, beds cow hide etc. They
sleep with the baby cows, eat only meat and live a subsistence living.
All are terribly thin as they walk miles and miles tendering the cows. An especially tough life being a woman in this community.
