Whilst we contemplated the monument, a local man approached on a push bike. Although he didn't speak perfect English, we quickly established that he had some pieces of metal that he had recovered from the crash site and he wanted to give them to us. At first he thought that we were relatives of the crew, but not wanting to mislead him we managed to explain that we we were here by chance, although, as it happens, I also explained to him that my own uncle Alec had been shot down and killed not far from here, in Belgium. He posed for the photo and left us the relics (which I am going to give to my brother who is very interested in such things). It was almost as though he'd been waiting to do this and so, if that is true, I'm glad it was us who got to meet him.
