Travelling on, we made for Odense, the home town of Hans Christian Andersen. Several people had recommended we view his birth house but we couldn't find it, although we barely tried. Possibly the highlight of the Odense bit was the fact that I slipped badly on a discarded saveloy style sausage and nearly broke my neck. Shortly afterwards we came across this androgynous looking and huge statue in the main square. Apparently, each year on Hans Cristian's birthday people climb on the statue and see how many can balance on it. The record is an incredible 187, which is a nice number since he died in 1875. Apparently, as a child I liked his darker characters and my mother told me I always wanted the evil ones to win, which sadly they didn't tend to.
