There’s a pub on the east side of Heathrow called The Green Man. It’s car park is ideally situated to observe incoming aircraft, when, of course, they are approaching from the East, which they don’t always do. As they pass over the car park, they are low, just a couple of hundred feet. I have no idea why, but big planes seem to fly in lower than the smaller ones. By big planes, I mean four engine jobs, the most common being 747’s and Airbus A400’s. When these pass over the car park, the noise is deafening, although I've observed that the drinkers in and around the pub never acknowledge the fly byes in any way. As the planes approach, the noise level rises. Briefly, they seem to almost hover over us like giant pterodactyls, and for me there's a great sense of expectation and drama. Who are these new arrivals, and what are they going to do here? So, today, I went there and soaked up some of that drama. The (unedited) pic was a fluke of timing; I looked at the camera and pressed the shutter as a plane from Latvia came in, capturing the nose cone of the plane a split second before it went over my head. Hey, I’m weird, right?
