14 November 2012 - For John Fowles
Passing through Lyme Regis I thought about the late John Fowles (this being where he lived). "The Magus", by Fowles, is one of the small number of novels I've not only finished but thoroughly enjoyed. I think I started reading it on the Greek Island of Spetses, where part of the story was set. Anyway, the French Lieutenant's Woman, which I haven't read, involved one of the main characters standing on the groin known as "The Cobb" (the long black strip jutting out into the channel in the picture), whilst they were looking wistfully out to sea as the waves crashed around them. I think Jeremy Irons played a major role - I rate his smile as one of the least convincing of any British actor.
