Portland Island's main industry was production of Portland stone. Mainstream quarrying has long since ceased and the Island is littered with great blocks of the stuff as though one day it all just ground to a halt and the huge chunks of rock, hewn from the cliff face, were just left where they happened to be. The result has a vaguely Easter Island feel to it.
