When we watch films we ascribe all sorts of characteristics to the actors, often based on the characters they are playing, or their ability to express what we perceive to be authentic emotions. This results in the belief that we know these people, so when we come across them outside of their "home genre", there is the potential to disappoint. That's what Pacino did in this evening's chat about his life and work. He's actually a very ordinary chap, who clearly needs the medium of film to actually "be" anyone. It didn't help that tonight's format had Pacino being interviewed by the BBC's film man, Mark Kermode. The most exciting thing about Mark is his Teddy Boy hairstyle. His very dull questioning got nothing out of Pacino, accepting that there was actually nothing there to get at anyway. In fact, the most exciting part of the evening was a spat between an American Lady in front of us who had been asked to shut up by another member of the audience. They swore at each other for a good few minutes. I was kind of hoping for a punch up, but no such luck - at that moment I strangely recall Pacino saying that actually, he couldn't remember much about the films he'd been in anyway. Oh well.
