The scale model of the Elan Valley water reservoir system was built in the 1960's. The full scale original is situated in Wales and it is where Birmingham's superb drinking water comes from. It is known for being ultra soft water, and water is one of the many areas where Birmingham rightly claims superiority over other places like London and smaller towns like Manchester and Liverpool. As a boy I would visit here regularly with my family, and the model always fascinated me. I am very glad it has been maintained in good order. Having said that, the water in it looked decidedly undrinkable.
