This is Lt (Acting) John Godwin, RN, who was executed at Sachsenhausen (probably near where the previous photo was taken). His is an interesting and tragic tale, with a twist. Godwin was a British volunteer soldier who was born and brought up in Argentina. He was a heroic commando who took part in a raid named Operation Checkmate on Axis shipping near Haugesund, north of Stavanger in Norway. During the raid Godwin's party managed to sink a minesweeper and a number of steamers using limpet mines, but they were eventually captured by the Germans. After spending some time in Grini concentration camp in Norway, Godwin was sent to Sachsenhausen, where, contrary to the Geneva Convention, he was forced to march 30 miles a day on cobbles testing army boots (we saw the area where this testing occurred). On 2 February 1945, the young Lieutenant was led to his execution, in accordance with Hitler's Commando Order of 1942. Before facing the firing squad, Godwin managed to wrestle the pistol of the firing party commander from his belt and he shot the officer dead before being himself fatally shot. However tragic, this end seemed to achieve some measure of justice. One can only imagine what sort of a bloke John Godwin was.
