Southend's Pier (just visible on the horizon) extends 1.34 miles into the Thames Estuary, it is the longest pleasure pier in the world. Sir John Betjeman once said that "the Pier is Southend, Southend is the Pier". Amazingly, it has a train running along its entire length. As a boy, a ride on the train was one the highlights of a summer visit.
