My grandfather's regiment. He survived two massive battles and various campaigns, not far away from this place. At one point after a battle, he found himself alone in a ditch half filled with water, with hundreds of his fellow soldiers strewn around him, all dead. He subsequently spent 6 months laid up with shell shock (post traumatic stress disorder in today's parlance). It coloured his life until his dying day (in 1969) and in a strange way, it colours mine still today.
