Many will remember the 1977 epic film "A Bridge Too Far" (film poster reproduced upper left). This is the bridge in question, in Arnhem, Holland where our road trip wound up at the end of this fine day. In WW2, as the Allies advanced, Arnhem found itself in a key strategic location and securing the bridgehead was critical to further progress. I'm afraid it didn't work out, and the location became a scene of an heroic failure, albeit a temporary pause in the march to victory. Btw, checking on the film, it starred just about anyone who was anyone in the hero acting stakes of the time (being British, hero status seemed assured regardless of the fact that the battle was actually lost - I think that's one of our key British attributes, winning is rather less important than doing the "right thing", or even just trying to do the right thing).
