04 March 2012 - Cremation Ovens
These are the remnants of several ovens used to cremate the remains of victims. Several hundred tonnes of dumped human ash were found at the camp when it was liberated in 1945. As the guide talked our group though these awful details, I noticed one of the party was eating a cream cake. I do not in any way criticise the individual for doing this, but it did create a sense of paradox; the weird comparison of then and now and how where we stood was once the scene of total and utter despair and misery, whilst now it was, at least in part, a tourist attraction.
