June 20 2015 - Umberto I
I spied this statue shortly beyond the "wedding zone". It continues to fascinate me how people who once were considered worthy of public adoration, or at least recognition, were now marked solely by an obscure statue which I'm sure few people would bother to acknowledge in any way. For my part, I will momentarily elevate these people into the realms of fleeting re-acknowledgment. So, to give him his full name, he is: Umberto Ranieri Carlo Emanuele Giovanni Maria Ferdinando Eugenio di Savoia. He was the King of Italy14 March 1844 – 29 July 1900 and he was called "The Good", although, as my additional picture well illustrates, a more fitting handle may have been "Umberto The Walrus King".
