It was a bi-lingual ceremony, by virtue of Italian law. The betrothed had to agree to all manner of legal promises which might seem a bit detailed compared with British law. Mind you, one such declaration was that if the union produced a child, the parents would be entitled to put it to work at the age of 12, which we all agreed was eminently reasonable.
