The word "Funicular" is derived from the Latin "Funiculus" meaning "rope-like". Apparently, the earliest funicular were nothing more than long ropes with knots in them (for gripping purposes) pulled up and down by hand picked teams of strong men chanting "Whoa, heave-ho" repeatedly.
