June 13 2015 - Anvil Cloud
My early geography studies had me marvelling at the phenomena of the beautiful “Anvil Cloud” and I was delighted to see this magnificent example and record its image on the way to Naples. It’s Latin name is "Cumulonimbus Incus" (Latin "incus" meaning "anvil"). The anvil-like top is caused by wind shear or inversion near the tropopause and it actually consists of icy particles. Why the ice particles don't just drop is one of those mysteries of physics. These clouds can lead to severe storms and pilots, migrating birds and hang gliders are advised to avoid them.
