18 June 2014 - Paradore #5, at Santiago De Compostela
From Baiona, we headed north to the old town of Santiago De Compostela. Incorrectly, I thought it might mean Saint James of the Compost Heap. However, that wasn't so far out since one lexicographic theory is that the name "Compostela" derives from the Latin "compositellam" meaning "the well composed one" and of course, "compost heap" is all about being de-composed. In any event, legend has it that St James, the apostle, is buried here. The Paradore is actually a former Catholic hospital, built to serve pilgrims who made the St James pilgrimage.
