15 June 2014 - Guzman El Bueno
Alonso de Guzmán (1256–1309), known as Guzmán el Bueno ("Guzman The Great"), was a Spanish nobleman, and the founder of the line from which the dukes of Medina Sidonia descend. According to Spanish tradition, Guzman was born in León. Guzman, of course, is a hero of mine, simply because I first heard of him via a statue in Tarifa (southern tip of Spain) and I liked the sound of him. Even his name "Guzman" is a great name, and the simple handle "el Bueno" adds something special, something good. Therefore when, wandering aimlessly, without purpose around Leon I came across his statue, I was more than delighted to be reminded of my good friend. At this moment, I'm drinking a Galician tinto - here's to you Guzman!
