Despite the fact that I have very little interest in sport, if I catch myself watching something like this, I find myself feeling quite emotional. I'm not sure why this is. Could it have something to do with emotional programming by reading comics where blokes like Alf Tupper overcome the odds through sheer doggedness and by being 'good'. I had the same feeling watching a clip of a 14 year-old Nadia Komanech scoring perfect 10's for gymnastics many years ago. The dark side was illustrated in an extended interview with an Irish athlete who failed to make it, used EPO in desperation, got caught, disqualified and is now trying to make up the lost emotional ground while he was doing single minded solitary, long distance running training fro 15 years.
