11 July 2012 - The Torchbearer Waits
The excitement over the torch has been quite extraordinary, if not slightly unnerving. The country seems under a bizarre "torch-spell". We made our way to the route and found ourselves conveniently at a handover point. I seized the chance of a pic with the next incumbent and as can be seen, I had an urge to make off with the torch. As it happens, I resisted, since it wasn't yet alight and there was a heavy police presence.

Tim Actually the heavy Stasi presence,the endless cavalcade of back up vehicles,detracts from the symbolic nature of the torch Meanwhile a criminal wanted for armed robbery and more gave the old Bill the slip at Manchester airport,instead of meeting himoff the plane from Amsterdam the coppers waited at immigration and he clambered through a luggage chute and did a runner!
M I think I heard that the torch came to Dublin a few weeks ago. No-one seemed to pay much attention.
