In 1980 I got a job as a Finance Analyst for the Austin Rover Car Group, in the East Works Engine factory, at Cofton Hackett, Longbridge. Today, the whole thing's gone. It looks like the site is being prepared to have a housing estate built on it. Thousands of people worked here, making several thousand engines and gearboxes for mini's, metro's etc. I notice the road into the site is called "East Works Drive". Just over the road, I watched the meeting when Red Robbo lost the vote to go on strike, and with that, an era was over. Whatever era followed that is now also over.
