And he asked me, quite politely, whether I thought it appropriate to take photo's of people without their permission. That's an interesting question.

You don't let us in on what you offered by way of an answer. I think we addressed this issue in relation to funerals. I thought it was a particularly British and First Class framing of the question...although if he had actually used the apostrophe attributed to him, he didn't deserve an answer.

PS I wonder if he could be Rowan Atkinsons son

I gave the standard answer that it was all in the name of art and that is, in fact, how all things will end (in art, that is, as was once so brilliantly asserted by Brian Eno). I find this answer appeals to anyone who has any even slightly arty pretensions and in this man's case, he accepted the explanation as a self professed "art lover". You are too hasty in the apostrophe criticism. In this instance, it indicates that part of the word is missing - the "graph" in photograph - and has nothing to do with the possessive apostrophe as dealt with by Lynn Truss. As a former grammar school boy I don't tend to fall for the old Hell's Angel's routine (although the phenomena/phenomenon topic still seems to cause some "issues" which clearly bug you).
