It had been a remarkable trip. Rob's arm position is in recognition of a group of blokes at a French service area who used to same signal to encourage me to gun the accelerator as we sped off down the slip road to the motorway. I responded accordingly and there were cheers all around as the exhaust produced that rather special formula one style backfiring noise (deliberately amplified by an absurd special button on the Jag control panel). Therefore, there may be sadness in a trip like this, but there is also joy and, curiously, that joy is only something I have had the opportunity to experience as a result of my old grandaddy taking the trouble to survive long enough through the mayhem of those French fields to ensure my ultimate procreation (via my own Dad, of course). So, Grandad, let me proclaim to you, for both the sadness and the joy, a great big "Thank You!"
