On 1 July 1916, the Newfoundland regiment was pretty well wiped out at this spot. In fact, they were in an action alongside the 1st Essex Regiment, which was not my grandfather's lot, although I expect he knew some of them. I think the 1st Essex took heavy losses too. The location is well preserved, with clear evidence of extensive trenches and, once again, the feelings one gets are profound and palpable.
