There was no doubt that London 2012 was a multifaceted triumph. Not only did Britain put on a superb show, virtually everything went like a dream - the logistics were amazing and the British athletes' performances fantastic (including those who didn't win gold or any other medal for that matter). If I had to single out one particular performance (and personality) it was the boxer from Leeds, Nicola Adams. Her smile and down to earth humility will probably be my abiding memory of the games. Mind you, if we wanted any metaphor for British eccentricity, it was definitely the closing ceremony (as per snap above, courtesy of Lorraine, a fellow volunteer). Some of the people and songs we chose to show the world as we said our farewells were pretty bizarre. Highlights of those odd choices include: George Michael being allowed to showcase his latest single which nobody knew and which was interminable; that bloke from Oasis proving its possible to sing an entire song 100% off key; Annie Lennox being dragged around in bizarre galleon; Norman Cook in a giant plastic octopus and Ray Davies looking bemused with a very odd old person's barnet. Its a bit of shame since we barely accessed our back catalogue of British pop singalongs (even though I'm rather relieved they decided to give Macca a rest - he's becoming like the drunken uncle doing his toe curlingly embarrassing karaoke stint at the wedding disco). But, as someone said, we are eccentric, and we definitely proved it. Incidentally, I thought the Rio taster was a bit naff and I think they need to dig a bit deeper than a few scantily clad, samba dancing, carnival girls, supported by a sheepish looking Pele, who demonstrated how pitiful one can become after a glittering 20 year football career followed by a dismal 40 year career turning up at stadiums, grinning and waving to people who increasingly don't know who the hell he is. The poor thing.
