Lichens are not a single organism, but a combination of fungus and algae. I have long admired this fascinating quirk of the natural world, and one of my heroes is the world famous Swiss botanist and specialist Lichenologist Simon Schwendener, who was the first scientist to propose the so called dual theory of lichens in 1867. My old woodwork teacher, Mr J B R R Rowe, was famous for his catch phrase "Look at that Lichen, its all Wubbery".
