Well since the old Inca Trail we haven´t really had time to rest. As we weren´t really in the mood for celebrating when we got back from the Inca Trail, me and leeroy took it upon ourselves to celebrate the night after instead. We headed into town watched a bit of footy and a movie then randomly bumped into the rest of our Inca Trail group. They were heading out for a meal so we decded to join them. I thought it´d be rude to go to Peru and not sample the local delicacy which happens to be Guinea Pig or cuy! So this is what I had for my dinner, you have the choice whether to have it fried, baked or battered, mine came baked and it literally looked just like a Guinea Pig, with everything intact, it even had a grin on its face with its teeth showing, yummy! I´ll upload the photos soon. The meat itself was actually really nice even if the skin was slightly salty, the only thing I would say is that it is very tricky to get the meat off as there are many small bones, the meat tastes a bit like a cross between duck and lamb, it was good!
After our night out on the town it was time to head to Puno, which is a town on Lake Titicaca in Peru, this would be just a stop off before crossing the border to Bolivia and ariving at the nicer town of Copacabana, (as in the song, but not the actual one from the song, because thats in Brazil!), we spent one night in Puno had some scran then went to bed ready for our bus in the morning! When we arrived in Copacabana we were pleasantly surprised, is was a small place and extemely chilled out, which is just what we needed after the hectic Cuzco, there were loads of funky little retaurants and hippies selling crazy stuff on the street, pretty cool. We also found an awesome hostel which was an old rustic building whos top floor overlooked the lake (Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world at a height of 3800m above sea level!), there was a wooden table and chairs on the balcony where we had a few beers and watched the sunset, sweet as! The local speciality was trout and it was well nice, I had trout stroganoff with mashed potatoes, yum!
The following day we had booked a trip to Isla del Sol, which is an island on Lake Titicaca and is deep in Inca history as they belive thi sis where the sun originated from, the boat to the island was frustratingly slow and we thouggt we´d never get there! We did eventually but it wasn´t that exciting so I´m not going to talk about it very much, we checked out some more Inca ruins, (think we´re a bit ruined out, and nothing compares to Macchu Pichu!) then went on a three hour walk, not the best day, but it only cost about 2 quid, as most things in Bolivia do!
We had one more day in Copacabana which we spent relaxing and watching more footy, much needed! After Copacabana we travelled to La Paz which is where we are now, this place is massive, it never ends and from afar the masses of houses just look like red lego pieces scattered around everywhere with no order, its not a very nice place as its very dirty and smelly but we are only here for 2 nights before heading to Santa Cruz.
Today was the one day that we will have in La Paz and we decided to fill it by nearly killing ourselves. About three hours from La Paz there is road called, The Road of Death, it is the most dangerous road in the world and some records say that 200 to 300 travellers die on it each year, so we decided to cycle down it! And we paid for the privelidge! We got up early and the company came and picked us up, and fed us what could have been our last breakfast! We drove to the start point and donned all our gear which was pretty good, they gave us full on cycling gear with gloves padded shorts and a top, the bike was pretty good too with full suspension, we needed it!
We set off on quite an easy road to begin with as it was tarmaced, this is the new road that leads you to the Road of Death, there were seven of us in the group and we all nailed it down the tarmac road at about 40mph, its a steep road! After about two hours we reached the Raod of Death! Suddenly the tarmac turns into a gravel track, the road is about 3m wide and the drop on one side is to your certain doom, we all slowed down! As the Bolivians drive on the right we all had to stay cliff side incase a big truck comes racing towards you, and heres me thinking I could hug the cliff face, no such luck!
We spent about three hours racing down the track and I mean we were racing, we travelled 75km in about 4 hours with stops as well, we all tried to keep up with the guide but he was just too fast! The corners were deadly and the chain kept on coming off the first bike I had so I changed for another one only this time the back brake didn´t work, great! Luckily the guide tightened my brake and I was off again, it was a pretty hairy ride but I loved it, we cycled through small waterfalls and the views were awesome! Slightly eery was the fact that you could see wrecks of cars as you look over the edge and we cycled past a grave were an Israely had fallen off fiev weeks ago whilst cycling on the same tour we were doing! It turned out he was with our same company and our same guide!
Finally we reached the end and it was a great relief for everyone, as we had all survived and we were too knackered to go any further! Included in the tour was entrance to a local hotel which was awesome we had a shower and a swim then had a buffet lunch, sweet as! Before we knew it, it was time to go back to La Paz, and here comes the surprise, as we were at the hotel we had a view of the old road and the new one, we assumed we would use the new one to get back, but the driver had a different idea! After a few minutes travelling it was clear the driver was driving us back up The Death Road, not funny, we had just heard stories of how dangerous it was for vehicles and there was a new road for Pete sake! Oh well there wasn´t a lot we could do about it, we just sat down scared to death while we rattled up the road in an old minibus not fun! But I suppose it was worth it after we survived. So you could say we survived the Death Road twice!
Well thats it in La Paz, we´re travelling to Santa Cruz tomorrow where we fly to Buenos Aires on the 27th, can´t wait!
