After breakfast we took a songthew back to the bridge for photos without all the tourists. Photos taken, Mum headed into the markets and the rest of us up to a cafe for coffee. Coffee is a 'loose' word here. Pretty much if they say latte or cappucchino it really means strong black coffee with milk or a little frothed milk on top. Completely understandable if you think about it.
A couple of souvenirs later and it was back to the hotel to pack up and lunch. Bartering for a songthew (60baht from the hotel), he initially wanted 100baht, I said 60 baht, he said 120baht? We walked and funnily enough 60baht won.
Marie wandered over for a foot massage hile we packed up and met at Meat and Cheese.
We had thought pizza's would be a good idea before the bus ride but unfortunately they didn't start cooking them until 1pm so we settled for other food and we were still eating when the bus arrived. It definitely is a different service when the boss isn't around.
A 2hr bus ride and we were at Amphawa. I had found this place while googling, with it's floating markets and King Rama Palace grounds I thought it would be a good place to see especially as it is in no guides I have ever seen.
We had booked into Amphawa Na Non Hotel. Quite quirky, imacculate simply decorated in a good way. It was here we found 'In the night garden' on the abc is even worse in Thai. Although we all kind of got engrossed in this bug cartoon, which is quite sad when the 2yr old is no longer watching it.
We attempted to have tea at the hotel. . . Even after we were told they only had beer or Watermelon smoothies (the list was much longer than this) the final straw was when we were told they really only had pasta or club sandwiches available. Now this place is well reviewed and we were shocked that of the 30+ dishes on the menu only about 5 were available we decided to leave and find someone else.
Mum was approached on the way out by staff who asked her why we were leaving. When she explained they attempted to tell her there was no where else but when she asked the waiter suddenly she put her hands up and didnt say anymore, funnily enough.
We wandered through the market, finding a restaurant overlooking the river. Wonderful homecooked meals came out quickly, while we watched the sunset. Simply beautiful.
Back to the hotel for Phil's and Miss A while Mum, Dad, Marie and I wandered down to the Amphawa Floating Market. Very quirky market, with food vendors interspersed with clothing and handicrafts. Some truely amazing things can be seen here. From the obvious different types of fish, to dried squid to of all things Horseshoe crabs!
As we walked around mum wanted to know what fruit a lady was separating. I told her it was Durian fruit. As I was explaining how this fruit is highly prized here, yet the smell pretty much either makes people love or hate it the lady handed mum some to try with a smile. They know the usual reaction from foreigners to this fruit however as it turns out mum loves it and would happily pay for it. I dont mind it but Phil hates it as did Dad.
A couple of t-shirts purchased and we leisurely made our way back to the hotel.
Comment of the night:
Philip turned the tv up after every channel suddenly went to a politician talking about some crisis in Thailand. To my comment of 'do you understand Thai better when it is louder? No it just makes the subtitles easier to understand. . . Huh Really?? ;) It will take a long time before he lives that one down.
A relaxing easy day, can't believe this trip it is going so quickly.
