Well we have arrived in Cuenca and considering both of us were pretty apprehensive about the bus trip after the last one I am happy to say everything went well and we have all our belongings although we were concerned when 5hrs in they moved our bags to the back of the bus??
Comedic things for Phil
1. We went through a town called Colon
2. The amount of restaurants he can turn into a shocking comment is truely staggering
After arriving half an hour early to Cuenca we have settled into our hotel and unfortunately are only here until lunchtime tomorrow.
We located a place to do our laundry and 5 pounds (everything is in US measurements) will cost us $2.75! Could you imagine that in Australia.
After a quick walk around I think we have determined that Cuenca currently holds the record of the largest number of churches per square metre!! They range from truely immense to quite small and intimate.
After consulting the lonely planet guide we settled on the aptly named Cafe Eucalyptus. Figured we couldn't go past a place with the name Eucalyptus in it. Unfortunately the food was a little disappointing with a number of choices not even available but all in all not too bad.
After dinner we wandered down to check out yet another church to check it out at night. This one we had seen earlier in the day and it said that it lit up at night so we had to check that out. It was pretty cool.
We then decided we could go a glass of wine and a piece of cake. Well we are on holidays of course :) After consulting our trusty guide we decided on Cafe Austria. Wine wasn't too bad and the cake was excellent. Seems like the Ecuadorians certainly know how to make cake.
It was then off to bed. Rising early we collected our washing (with all items present yay) and after packing up went for a last walk around Cuenca before our bus to Guayaquil.
The highlight of the walk was a little flower market we found. I had heard of a blue rose but never seen one before. In nature a blue rose doesn't exist and it has taken scientists a long time to work out why and how to prooduce them. Of all the places to find one it was Cuenca.
Truely beautiful and i'm not a big rose fan.
A final wander and off to the bus station for our trip to Guayaquil. Cuenca has been nice but we certainly didn't enjoy it as much as Banos.
