Treggas Travels
G'day all,
Just a quick update of what I've been up to. In summary I am now living in London and still partying like a rock star. My first full winter in 2 years has been hard but the European summer is not too far away.
Here is what I have been up to:
Orange Throwing Festival, Italy
The lesser known of the food throwing festivals but a whole lot crazier!
I flew into Milan for a weekend and it was bad news from the start as the Captain of the plane announced it was minus 1 degrees and snowing outside. I had hoped to look around Milan but the weather was terrible. I arrived in the little town west of Milan which had even more snow and the soles of the old faithful Blundstones had worn through. Frostbitten toes is not good. Fortunately there was plenty of boiling hot red wine.
The orange battles are for 3 days and basically everyone dresses up in the colour of their section of town. There are 30 horse-driven carts that do laps into each of the 9 parts of town. The 10 people in the carts wear helmets and throw oranges, literally as hard as they can into the crowd. There are hundreds of people in the crowd that hurl them back. Needless to say there was quite a few black eyes and blood noses.
I was glad I wasn't there the year they almost cancelled it because people had been freezing the oranges. I was hit a few times but luckily my fielding for the SHC XI and JAAS cricket teams had given me plenty of practice at dodging at flying objects.
Surprisingly, there was hardly any tourists at all and the local Tourist Office only had information in Italian and French (I thought everyone spoke English!). Fortunately, my basic Italian mastered at the Antonello's meant I was still able to order a Peroni or Nastro Azzuri beer.
(there will be photos to follow)
Edinburgh
Caught up with old mates, although I booked the flight before checking to see who was actually going to be there that weekend. Basically visited my old party areas and went out for lunches and dinner.
London
- Exploring more pubs (although visits to the Slug are a bit too frequent)
- Seeing some bands - Blur, The Thrills, You Am I, Jebediah
- Soccer - Arsenal v Middlesborough, Fulham v West Ham
- Opening of a photography exhibition - there was only 9 photos but worth mentioning for all the free alcohol
- When Harry Met Sally with Luke Perry (Beverly Hills 90210) and Alison Hannigan (Willow in Buffy)
I am currently living with a couple from Sydney in a ohouse with the biggest lounge I have seen in London which makes for a great party house.
However, I will be kicked out soon and moving back to live in Fluro's house in Hammersmith while his housemate is away.
Cheers Mark
