The site has been continuously occupied since prehistoric times (50,000BC) through Cro-Magnon, Neolithic, Bronze, Iron and Gallo-Roman. However the greatest period of use was as a fort and town during the Middle Ages (beginning 10th century) until the renaissance, when in 1588 the site was destroyed by the wars of religion.
