Switchbacks, Kicking Horse Pass - Yoho NP.
When the rail was first put over the mountain pass, run away trains were common, often with deaths. Then it was decided to emulate a Swiss model of switchbacks to slow the trains and two were constructed with mixed success. In the photo the entry and exit of one of the switchbacks is shown, with the long trains and extra engines it was not uncommon to be able to see the rear of the train entering at the top opening with front exting below.
