The walled city of Avignon, built by the Pope in the 13th century to escape political persecution in Italy. The papal only returned to Italy when they were promised the sanctuary of their own "country" the Vatican. The Historic Centre Of Avignon: Papal Palace is UNESCO World Heritage listed.
