A remnant of ice clings to the crater rim, even though the lake below is warm. We trudged through several kilometers of ice in the Askja Caldera to reach this inner crater. The area was formed by two volcanic eruptions, the first forming the large caldera, then a second under the lake creating the inner hot pool crater, Viti.
