In 1170 Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in the Catheral (by 4 knights, probably under the instruction of King Henry second) This elevated Canterbury to one of the most important pilgrimage centres in Europe. Canterbury Cathedral is UNESCO World Heritage listed.
