The bridge was built in the 12th century by the Popes who resided in Avignon for a time when they fled political turmoil in Rome. (They later returned to Rome and established the Vatican as their own country). It was partly destroyed by a flood. The Historic Centre Of Avignon: Papal Palace, Episcopal Ensemble and Avignon Bridge are UNESCO World Heritage Listed.
