The view from the memorial out over the cemetary. The losses of Australia numbered 59,000 dead out of 215,000 casulties throu out the war. Nearly 10% of Australias population of 4.9 million participated in the military during WW1. Australia captured Papua, guarded the Suez Canal in 1914, fought at Gallipoli in 1915, then the Somme in France and Belgium in 1916.
