Prior to the war it was simply Airfield 3. However this was where the Australians lured the enemy out into the open and a trap, bringing the battle to a victory. The memorial celebrates Squadron Leader Peter Turnbull who was killed in action, straffing the attacking Japanese. The airstrip was named in his honour.
