Hey blogsters!
We're back in Bangkok for a few days until we head down to the Thai beaches for 4 weeks, so we thought we'd fill you in on our fun times in Ho Chi Minh City and our fantastic time in Cambodia.
Ho Chi Minh was suprisingly a really cool city- very cosmopolitan with lots going on. We only spent a day in the city because we were eager to get to Cambodia but we managed to take a tour to the Cu Chi Tunnels, which were used by the Viet Cong to fight the Americans and Southern Vietnamese in the war. We learnt lots from our excellent guide and crawled through the tiny tunnels- only managing 30m before the claustrophobia set in!
Next stop Cambodia!!
What an amazing country! It has to be our favourite place so far. After a pretty awful bus journey across the border from Ho Chi Minh City, we landed in Phnom Penh, the Cambodian capital. We met up with Daniel, one of Steve's (Carley's bro) friends, who is living there and was kind enough to put us up for a few days. We spent a few days exploring the city, eating Khmer food (delicious), and even taking a fish foot massage- small fish feasting on the dead skin on our feet!
We delved into Cambodian history by visiting the Killing Fields and Tuol-Sleng where the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge took place. A pretty shocking and harrowing experience but it was nontheless interesting to learn about the events which are such a major part of Cambodian history.
After being culture vultures for a few days it was time get back to business on the beaches so we headed down south to Sihanoukville and caught up with some friends we had met in Hanoi. Four days flew by as we were pampered by relaxing massages on the beautiful beaches and partied with the fantastic Cambodian staff from our guest house- some of the most friendly and generous people we have met along the way. We were really sad to leave them and they have already planned our next visit to go back and see them next year! After raving on the beach in the rain, bar dancing and mid-night sea swimming it was time to head back to Phnom Penh for a detox so we loaded up our tuc-tuc (four people, four large ruckstacs and three guitars!) and said our farewells to Spidey, Mom, Red and James Dean.
Back in the city, we visited an orphanage called Save Poor Children in Asia Organisation and spent the morning playing with the kids and teaching them the Hokey Cokey and how to have thumb wars! We visited the local market with the orphange's cook and bought some supplies to keep them stocked up for a while.
That afternoon we boarded a bus to Siem Reap, from where we visited the incredible Angkor Temples. Having been picked up by our tuc-tucs at 4.30am, we managed to find our way though the temples in the darkness and set up camp opposite Angkor Wat to watch a beautiful sunrise. We spent fourteen hours exploring the main temples and had an amazing day wandering around the stunning ruins- check out the photos...some incredible sights and posing a plenty! That night we hit Pub Street and finished our 25 hour day in the infamous Angkor What? bar, indulging in the traditional customs of wall graffiti, buckets of cocktails, free t-shirts and plenty of dancing!
After two hours sleep, we braced ourselves for a fourteen hour bus journey back to Bangkok where we have spent the last few days chilling out before we hit Kho Phanghan for the full moon party- whoop!
