Early hours of the morning I was fast asleep but Donna could here a car sliding about seeming to struggle to get out of the campground. Later on when it was time to start the day I put the kettle on as usual and opened a blind to check the weather - 'Oh my god, It's Christmas' is what I said. It was white over with snow, not up on the hills but the campground, our camper, everywhere. We are at 5000 feet above sea level so we are quite high. I measured the snow depth at 3 inches. We wondered how people had got on going to the Buffalo round up? We had a slow breakfast allowing time for the roads to clear. Eventually it was time to head East out of the Black Hills. The roads were clear, just very wet and slick. Local traffic was belting along as usual but we took it easy. It started snowing more, oh when will we see green hills and fields again? We passed through Hill City which was as white as Custer (but by the end of the day they will have a foot of snow). Slowly but surely the white blanket thinned until it was no more. We saw a sign for the 'Dances with Wolves' film set and pulled over for a break - the driving hadn't been relaxing so far. Most of the staff at the film set were actually at the round up and buildings were being locked up as we arrived as more staff left! Looking out towards Rapid City and beyond there was no snow in sight - phew!
