Not everything we plan we do! We left Valdez, the weather was shocking. We abandoned the idea of parking up just north of the Thompson pass and hiking up to get a close look at the Worthington glacier. We could hardly see the glacier from the road so we decided not to waste our time. Our next port of call was to be McCarthy and Kennicott, this involved drive up a 60 mile dirt road. Reports were that the road condition was difficult several days ago, with all the recent rain we decided it was a bad idea to venture down this road. Another loss, some ancient magnificent mining buildings and glaciers that you can walk on (for free). We stopped at a National park centre north of the McCarthy turning to learn that the road indeed was much worse than usual. Almost every vehicle was experiencing punctures or tyre wall damage due to flash floods exposing sharp rocks and old railway spikes. Large RV's had been stopped completely and people were being offered a 4 hour bus trip to get there at 65 Dollars a head. We made the right decision. Today was turning into just a driving day, we need to find some better weather. We were headed towards Tok where we tossed pancakes almost a month ago to win free breakfasts. We didn't complete our Alaskan loop today but stopped 10 miles short at Eagle Trail campsite. This was a forestry campsite with a pay station where you deposit your money in a box (no warden). There was only 2 other RV's here, it was extremely peaceful. Wood was free and plentiful and so we had a roaring fire. We had started the day in the wet and the cold, now we were sitting outside enjoying a warm fire even though we didn't really need it to keep warm as the weather was fab (at last). There was bear scat visible on the campsite tracks. Donna insisted I accompany her to the (drop) toilet (and sing to keep the bears away). Leaving Alaska tomorrow. Great sunset.
