Day 10 Lake Eyre / Coober Pedy
Today we drove 60km from William Creek to Lake Eyre. It’s an inland sea that fills up about every 10 years. The dry bottom is all salt, left over from the water. It’s really crunchy underneath your feet and it cracks easily. I took a piece of salt with me. After Lake Eyre we drove from William Creek 166km to Coober Pedy. We couldn’t see any houses until mum said that the houses are all under ground. Lunch was at a fantastic pizza shop called Johnny’s Pizza where we ordered huge meat lovers and ham and pineapple pizzas. After that dad went to fill up the car so mum took us over to an opal shop. The opals were so pretty, there was even a spot where you could try and find an opal. I found one that was full opal but had bits of rock on it. Afterwards we went to a mine called Tom’s Working Opal Mine. We looked around this actually active mine. We watched a video and explored the mine, I even found an opal in the wall of the mine. We were allowed to go and look for opals in two big buckets. Most of them were rocks but there was an opal here and there. I ended up finding 10 opals, some were big and some were small. After the mine we left to go to a roadhouse at a place called Marla.
