So the 17 hour journey ended up not going to well. Our bus left Bonito on time at 2.30pm and arrived at Dourados at 8pm as scheduled. Here we left our luggage in a secure hold and went for a wonder. We found a shopping mall a few streets down that was open and found what must be the busiest food court in south america at 10pm at night on a sunday - it was rammed, i dont know if people work monday morning or not but surely not a lot gets achieved. I had mountain of fried pork with a handful of chips and after a brief look around the shop returned to the bus station for 11.10 before our bus was scheduled at 11.30.
Half an hour later and still with no sig of our bus we tried to work out from the only person working in the bus station (who of course didnt speak english) where our bus was. Eventually we worked out it was now due at 3am - brilliant! I set up camp on a bench outside and somehow managed to get a couple of hours sleep in - not the best sleep, or safest i have ever felt. At 4am the bus the finally turned up and took us to Miranda. Here we were told to get off and had to switch bus again. The bus was due in 20 minutes, after another 2 hours of waiting the only english speaking worker in the bus station told us that the bus had broken down and we had to go with another company - our tickets were paid for and finally arrived at Foz Du Iguacu at 7pm, we were due to arrive at 8am! It was a long day to say the least! It did get better though as we worked out that we had too much Brazilian cash left, so the best thing to do was go into town for a slap up meal - and it was definately the best decision. The giant sirloin steak was amazing, after a stroll through the Christmas market we returned to the hostel for a chilled one.
Next morning we got up early and headed to Cataratas Iguasu (or the waterfall to you and me). There is a 20 minute bus ride out of town and then you enter the national park. From here another 20 minuite bus ride takes you to the start of the trail. From the Brazil side of the falls you can see the overview, but nothing up close, not at first at least. Iguasu itself is made up of 275 (i think) waterfalls, so as you start the trail you can see all of these on the other side of the canyon, each in their own right is impressive. Then there is a sheet of water puring over a 70m deep shelf what must be about an 80m width! After about a millio photos (look forward to scrolling through them) we rounded a corner where you are met by a roaring abyss - The Devil´s Throat. Instantly the other falls pale into insiginificane as a 3 sided sinkhole emerges. It is massive!!! There is a walkway that takes you right to the edge of the throat, at about half the height so you are surrounded by white water on 3 sides, pretty awesome! After another million photos (and soaking wet) we retreated to the end of the route and caught the bus back out of the park.
We got back to the hostel and collected our bags and went to the bus station for 4pm to get the 6 hour bus ride to Ascuncion, Paraguay. We had a couple of days to spare so thought why not cross over the border and see the Argentian side of the falls when we return.
