Tom C-B's Travels 2006
So... only my second entry since I arrived in New Zealand and we leave for Oz on Friday! Blimey - time flies when your having fun/throwing yourself out of planes and into canyons from silly heights!! Sorry, I'm getting ahead of myself now - I'll pick it up where I left off...
The brewery in Greymouth turned out to be a great success - a sausage eating contest was struck up with some Irish travellers at the all-you-can-eat BBQ and, together with a German guy from the same bus as us, we crushed their hopes with a total of 37 sausages between us, my personal tally coming to a fairly respectable 16! The following morning we drove to Franz Josef, home to the Franz Josef Glacier, on which we clambered for 3 and a half hours taking in the sheer size of this piece of ice! (The basin of it covered a 30 sq/km area of land to give you an idea, and we didn't even get to it in 3 and a half hours!) A night out in Franz Josef was probably not the best preparation for the 9 hour coach journey to Queenstown the following morning, but spirits were high and we were not to be deterred! So, as feared, a lot of sore-headed backpackers mounted the coach on Friday morning and hunkered down for the mammoth journey ahead! We rocked up in Queenstown at about 6pm, and started getting ready to go out again. I had also managed to book myself on the 'Nevis' bungy jump, the second highest bungy jump in the world for the following afternoon!! A good night was had by all and I went to sleep dreaming of throwing myself headfirst into a 134 metre deep canyon... Saturday morning, and the air was full of tension and apprehension on the shuttle bus on the way to the jump site. We got there and saw the launch pod suspended way out in the middle of Nevis Canyon, and the adrenaline started pumping through everyone's veins. You were required to stand with your feet on the edge of a platform the size of a board-game board, and fix your gaze on a pine tree across the valley to ensure the perfect dive. The feeling of leaping into nothingness is one that I can't describe - you have to do it to know what it is like, and I was winched back up simply speechless! After that bit of excitement, it was back to the hostel to get ready for our second and last night in Queenstown. More sore heads and 4 hours sleep later, we piled on to the coach to get to Dunedin, two stops away from our final destination Christchurch. After a few big nights out, we are planning to take it easy and catch Mission Impossible 3 at the cinema tonight.
So, that brings me up to date so i hope you have had a good read, and I'll be sending the DVD of my bungy jump back soon so it will be for hire from my house in the next few weeks!!
Bye - I'll be back...
