So we are still on the road and arrived at St. Arnaud- a small town on the edge of Nelson Lakes- in the evening. it was a basic campsite but it sat right on the waters edge. We settled down for the night- had our dinner and watched the sun go down- all with the montains and lake in the background.
We rose the next day and went for a walk on the peninsular. It only took an hour or so but was worth it- especially as we had a long, long journey ahead! We drove west towards the coast, stopping for lunch in Westport on the pier. We then ehaded down the coast. The beaches in this part are really nice- not white sand and blue sea- but they are wild with crashing waves and huge rocks everywhere- really cool. We reached Greymouth by the end of the day and stopped there- it had a really nice beach as well- it seemed to go on forever. We also managed to stop at the supermarket for some more food and also managed to find the first season of Prison Break on DVD- hopefully this will provide us with some much needed entertainment in the evening!!
The next day we continued south towards the mountains. We stopped at a few placed on the way, including a really walk to the beach through the rainfrest at Paparoa National Park. We also stopped at Punakaika Reserve or whats known as Pancake Rocks. These are 'stacks' of rock sticking out of the sea which have layers built in to them- they therefore look like a pile of pancakes! They are slowly being eroded by the sea so there are some cool shapes and holes where rocks once were. We arrived at Franz Josef Glacier in the mid afternoon.....
