We are currently sitting on a boat in Halong Bay, Vietnam. We do not have internet here, obviously, but I will post this entry as soon as we are near a computer again. We arrived in Halong Bay two days ago and have had a fun time onboard the boat. This trip is our first "tour" since beginning our travels and we were initially rather wary of such a structured program. However, we wanted to visit Halong Bay and it is a difficult place to visit on one's own. While our initial concerns about the tour structure were somewhat verified ("First you will wake up and have fifteen minutes to eat breakfast. Then you will go hiking for one hour. Then you will go swimming for twenty minutes. Then you will go…etc etc") the overall experience was a positive one and Halong Bay was beautiful. If you have seen pictures of Vietnam, they have probably included images from Halong Bay - it is a national treasure and quite spectacular.Huge, limestone rock formations jut straight up out of the aqua waters of the ocean. The rock islands are covered in dense jungle that hum with the sounds of cicadas -loud enough to be heard from a boat some distance out to sea.Dotted throughout the Bay are floating villages - small groups of wood and metal shacks tied together and surrounded by fishing nets. The highlight for me was probably a kayak ride that we took our first evening at sunset. We loved the chance to get away from the hustle and bustle and people that have filled our trip thus far and just BE in such a beautiful, peaceful place. We were in Halong Bay over a holiday weekend so there were many boats filling the Bay but in the kayak, we were able to get away from the activity at least a little bit which was lovely. We also hiked, bicycled, and explored caves - as I mentioned earlier, our tour had us on a tight schedule! The weather was rather rainy during our trip but the air was still warm and in many ways, the clouds and mist just added to the beauty of the scenery. As the boat floated along, islands would suddenly loom out of the mist and then fade back once more out of sight. We are now en route back to Hanoi where we will catch a bus down to the city of Hoi An.We will write again from there…
