Welcome to my Kenya blog, as you may be aware I'm travelling East Africa. Just been travelling in Ethiopia and now have flown to Nairobi. I landed at 2 am I had for once planned ahead and booked a hostel and a pick-up from the airport. Reading the Lonely Planet would put anyone off Nairobi; it describes it as Nai-robbery and Johannesburg's sister as the danger capital of Africa. So as you can imagine out of the whole trip I was a bit nervous about getting there at 2am. The taxi cost $25 from the airport, which seemed good value at the time.
Although caution is probably advisable at night, I never felt unsafe in the day in Nairobi and its nothing like Johannesburg.I had been in contact with a friend of mine id met on Travbuddy.com who lived in Nairobi. Her name is Stella, she 21 and full of energy. She invited me out for a night out, in the meantime I'd met this American girl in my hostel. She said she was working out in Kenya and she had a month to kill whilst she was waiting for her next set of volunteers. So I invited her along as I thought it would be a good idea for her to meet Stella.
So we all met up and went to a Karaoke bar. We had such a laugh, the only thing I will say is that there was only one problem. Kenya people in general can sing. One of Stella's friends sang Jenifer Hudson's 'Spotlight', she nailed it. It happens to be one of my favourite songs. Anyway, I say problem as I was ordered to sing, I picked a safe bet, Brian Adam's 'Summer of 69'. Now for those who don't know, I was described at my music teacher as having the voice of a dragon at school. So this didn't go well, I must have had 5 or 6 locals come up and pat me on the back, saying nice try mate!!!!! Lol. That aside I had a great night and would recommend Nairobi as a good night out.
My first impression of Kenya was that it was very English, same style number plates on the car, every driving on the correct side of the road plus they had a good standard of spoken English. I knew was going to like it here.
