Monkeying around
Hi Guys,
Well after 3 days on Kecil Island in the Perhentians we made our way to Penang to Georgetown, on an overnight bus. Georgetown is a large town / small city on Penang island which was once a British colony. Unfortunately the place is fairly run down. Lots of the old colonial buildings are in need of repair.
The people there though were so friendly, everyone says hello and quite often they stop for a quick chat to find out where you are from and what your plans are. We didn't have the best of weather there as it rained heavily on and off the whole time but we did get some bright spells. Incidentally due tot he open sewers, when it rains heavily you get to see the biggest rats ever, we used to see one every night with a cat eating out of the garbage bags and the rat was almost the same size!!
We ventured out to the snake temple, where there were vipers in the temple but luckily they get doped up on the fumes from the incense.... phew
The next day we made our way on a rickety old bus held together with tape! to the largest temple in Malaysia, primarily a Buddhist temple however there was a small bit devoted to Hinduism. The temples were amazing and they are still adding to it, just wait till I bore you all with my photos!!!
Olle and Sue then joined us for the night and we al went foe a lovely curry at a place called "passage to India" the next day several of us were quite familiar with out passages!!!
We then jumped onto the ferry Friday morning and had a rocky 2-hour ferry ride to Lankawi; we are staying in little chalets over the road from Cenang beach and its very pleasant. It's only just the start of the season so its very empty and quiet here and again we haven't been too lucky with the weather.
It was bright and sunny yesterday afternoon so we hired bikes and cycled to the airport passing rice padi's and water buffalo and then we stood at the end of the runway watching the planes fly overhead. Spooky.
Today if it brightens up we are going to go the a waterfall and possible Kok Beach (ooh eer) if not we may hire a car for the day and do a tour of the island.
Tomorrow we may move on to Thailand to Phi Phi........ Watch this space.
Lots of love, Al the adventurer
