No matter where you go in the world every destination has its quirks (or treats as I like to call it). Denmark (Copenhagen in particular) does it well and obviously. A few stand outs need to be shared:
1. We are travelling Europe via EU Rail (train); for this leg we were boarding in Netherland heading to Denmark via Germany. Situation: we need to cross the waterway between Germany and Denmark. In my mind we go over it (bridge) or under it (tunnel)... Logical, I'd say, going along with all of our other rail experiences. Nope. In true Danish style we drive the train directly onto a barge with all the other cars and trucks and ship everything over to the other side. A train on a boat! What a great start! I knew at that point I was going to like this place.
2. Change of guards. These guards don't just change outside of the Palace. They march through the city along the street obeying all the road rules just as a motorist and cyclist would. Stopping at red lights, using turning lanes and merging with traffic. Imagine a whole group of Marge Simpsons uniformly marching the streets - It's hilarious to watch.
3. Copenhagen has the cleanest manned free public toilets I have ever seen and they even offer wrapped boiled sweets upon exit. I didn't have one but I think it was a lovely gesture!
4. Lets just say that ducks have done well for themselves. If a "duck ramp" to get in and out of the pond isn't luxury I don't know what is.
5. Nyhavn is a renowned street boasting coloured house and beautiful, large boats. These babies - perfect for sailing - are scattered along the canal that runs through the middle of the street and small bridges are used for crossing to the other side. Now while this is the most stunning sight the bridges dont go up and the mast on the boats don't go down. Is there a way out?.. Nope. These beautiful boats are quite literally stuck there. Maybe this time the Danes need to get the boat to board the train to get out.
6. Rainbows make a full circle! Who knew this was even a thing. Lying in the park Marc spotted a rainbow, and moments later I realised it was making a full circle around the sun. As I have been informed by northerners this is called a "sundog". I'm not sure I get why its called that, but it sounds fun so I'm happy to play along.
7. After realising that ducks got pond ramps I found permanently fixed hammocks scattered in the park (for humans - not ducks!). I'm not about to complain about that luxury!
8. Danish pastries in Copenhagen. Not a quirk or funny - they just taste really, really good. I couldn't not mention it. Thank you Nana Miller for funding this Suitcase of Dreams treat!
9. On exiting Demark (via train) direction Sweden, we managed to get one more little farewell treat. Energy windmills, (heaps of them) not on land, but free standing in the middle of the Baltic Sea.
Denmark makes me laugh! I love it!
